The Constitution

constitutionCelebrating the United States should not just be done on the 4th July.  On September 17th we recognize Constitution Day.  The Constitution is the most important document in our country.  The Constitution is a list of rules, or guidelines, that protect and help citizens of the United States.   Although rules do not always seem fun, we do need them everywhere; like in schools, neighborhoods, teams, and even families.  Taking part in our government by voting, volunteering, and even expressing your thoughts and opinion on issues can be extremely exciting. Click below to find fun activities, facts, books, and websites that make government fun.

Amendments
Amendments are a large part of the Constitution, and they create changes that improve the original set of rules. You can find out how the United States government has changed, first hand. Find an older family member or elderly member of your community, and ask questions. Ask if they have always been able to vote. If yes, what about their parents? Did they play sports in school? What about other girls in their community? Where did they go to school, and how did they get there? Are restaurants and stores the same as they were growing up? Be sure to find out differences. Chances are many of the difference that these elderly people will describe have occurred because of amendments that have been made to the Constitution. See if you and your relatives can figure out which amendments may have made a difference.
