The Constitution

constitutionCelebrating the United States should not just be done on the 4th July.  On September 17th we recognize Constitution Day.  The Constitution is the most important document in our country.  The Constitution is a list of rules, or guidelines, that protect and help citizens of the United States.   Although rules do not always seem fun, we do need them everywhere; like in schools, neighborhoods, teams, and even families.  Taking part in our government by voting, volunteering, and even expressing your thoughts and opinion on issues can be extremely exciting. Click below to find fun activities, facts, books, and websites that make government fun.

The Bill of Rights
The Constitution also includes “The Bill of Rights”. The Bill of Rights describes abilities or liberties that every United States citizen has. It is a list of amendments, or additional changes, made to the Constitution in order to promote “equality”. This means that The Bill of Rights allows every person to have the same, or equal, rights as every other person in the United States. You can read The Bill of Rights by clicking on this link.

The First Amendment describes a right to free speech and print. This means that anyone is able to speak, write, and express their thoughts, no matter how silly they may seem to others. Play a game, where you may not have this ability or right. Play the no-name game. See how long you can talk to your sibling, parents, friend, or teacher without either of you using names. Whoever can go the longest is the winner. If this game is too easy try telling a story without using names of people. How does this feel? What would it be like if you had to talk without using names for an hour? What about the whole day? What are some problems that might pop up? Why do you think this right is so important in the United States?
