The Constitution

constitutionCelebrating the United States should not just be done on the 4th July.  On September 17th we recognize Constitution Day.  The Constitution is the most important document in our country.  The Constitution is a list of rules, or guidelines, that protect and help citizens of the United States.   Although rules do not always seem fun, we do need them everywhere; like in schools, neighborhoods, teams, and even families.  Taking part in our government by voting, volunteering, and even expressing your thoughts and opinion on issues can be extremely exciting. Click below to find fun activities, facts, books, and websites that make government fun.

Creating a Constitution
Who makes the rules in your family? Often it feels like only adults have a say in how things are run at home. Talk to your parents or other adult family and discuss why you have certain rules in your family. Next, create your own “Constitution”. With other family members, draft up family rules for the day. What are some rules that you would get rid of, and what are some that would stay the same? Be sure to remember why the adults in your family may have created a rule. What might happen if they were gone? After creating your “Constitution,” pick a day where everyone can participate in your rule changes. Be sure to talk about the good and bad things that happened. What would have happened if you had continued for a week, month, or year?
