The Constitution

constitutionCelebrating the United States should not just be done on the 4th July.  On September 17th we recognize Constitution Day.  The Constitution is the most important document in our country.  The Constitution is a list of rules, or guidelines, that protect and help citizens of the United States.   Although rules do not always seem fun, we do need them everywhere; like in schools, neighborhoods, teams, and even families.  Taking part in our government by voting, volunteering, and even expressing your thoughts and opinion on issues can be extremely exciting. Click below to find fun activities, facts, books, and websites that make government fun.

Get Up and Vote
Even though you may not be 18 you can still decide on your favorite candidates. In November the United States will be voting for a president. (This only happens every four years!) Ask your parents if you can hold your own election, and cast a “mock” or pretend vote. Check out this website to learn more about mock elections.

Before you vote you will need to learn about the candidates. With an adult use this or other websites and resources such as newspapers, magazines, books, and television programs to learn more about the candidates, John McCain and Barack Obama. Next download a ballot or create your own. There should be a spot to pick either John McCain or Barack Obama. Make sure everyone has a ballot and can vote alone if they want to. Finally collect all of the votes and count them up. Keep track using a tally chart. Whoever has the most votes is the election winner of your household. Be sure to talk about how it felt to vote. Did your favorite candidate win? Talk about your favorite parts of voting and your least favorite parts. What would you do differently the next time?
