George Ancona was born in New York City. He worked as a graphic designer for 10 years before quitting to become a photographer. He began creating children's books using the photographs he took of the people and places he encountered around the world. He is the author of : Handtalk School; Bananas-From Manolo to Margie; Man and Mustang; Golden Lion Tamarin Comes Home; the American Family Farm; TurtleWatch; Fiesta USA; Then and Now; and Pow Wow.
