Thunderstorms

teamworkThunderstorms are large, strong storms that usually include thunder and lightning.  They are extremely common in New Hampshire on hot days during the summer.  Although thunderstorms can be extremely dangerous, they provide a great opportunity to explore meteorology, ecology, physics, and chemistry with children.

Arthur agrees to babysit for the "Terrible Tibble Twins." It's a challenge, but Arthur gets some help from SWAMP THING! Arthur's family is hosting the once-a-year-is-more-than-enough family reunion, and Arthur is doing his best to avoid pain-in-the-neck Cousin Mo. Sleepover/The Disappearing Waterhole (Show 136) - Airs 7/21/2008
Wartz gets nervous about a storm. / Ick is afraid that the water in the waterhole will disappear. Curriculum Idea: Fears and Investigation - Everyone gets scared and being scared is nothing to be ashamed of, since it is a natural reaction that we have to situations that we think might be unsafe. / Curriculum Idea: The Water Cycle - Water exists in three states of matter and the way it evaporates, condenses, and freezes can be observed in the world around us.

Caillou

Caillou the Brave (Show 305)
Caillou musters up his courage to ride down the big water slide. Grandpa babysits and brings along a book about sailing ships and a real telescope, and Caillou conquers his fear of a thunderstorm by pretending to be a brave sea captain. Caillou uses stories and drawings to teach Rosie about bugs.

The Elephant Upstairs
- George hears a loud thumping sound coming from the ceiling of their apartment and becomes convinced that the new upstairs neighbor has an elephant for a pet. / George gets tired of being a monkey because monkeys have to clean their rooms, brush their teeth, and go to bed early. He experiments with being a cat and a pigeon, but decides that the best of all is to be a dog like Hundley. Educational Objectives: To demonstrate that different objects can produce sounds that are similar in volume and pitch./To demonstrate that the form and behaviors of each kind of animal are related to each animal's needs. Scaredy Dog/Say Goodnight, George (Show 212) - Airs 8/7/2008
George and Hundley are scared off by a Big Creepy Noise they hearing down in the basement./ George is out playing ball when the Man with the Yellow Hat calls him in for bedtime. But who can sleep when the sun is still out? The Man explains that in spring there's more daylight, so it's lighter at bedtime. Related Game: Cows Don't Quack Educational Objectives (Science): To explore how the volume and clarity of a sound may change depending on one's distance from the source of the sound, and/or by covering or muffling the sound (covering one's ears for example.) Also to introduce tools that are used to copy (tape player) or magnify (megaphone) sound.

A Tall Tale / Stormy Weather (Show 119)
Max complains that he's too short to do anything. He's really frustrated when the friends meet Eunice the unicorn, a near-sighted dragon who has lost her glasses, and he's too short to climb on her back to help her steer. Related activity / The friends visit Cloud Island, and Ord spots a big storm cloud heading their way. The roar of thunder frightens Ord, who becomes invisible and heads into a nearby cave. Ruff, in an artistic mood, is working on putting the finishing touches on his latest masterpiece when he hears the loud crashing of thunder outside his doghouse. Having just heard the weather announcer on W-O-O-F predict clear skies, a confused Ruff is determined to figure out what's going on. He sends Taylor out to learn how to forecast the weather. And Noah, Khalil, and Brian must brave the elements to make some art of their own as they join the city's mural crew in planning and painting a mural for a local pizzeria.

Kate Shelley and the Midnight Express (Show 804) - Airs 7/18/2008
This is a true story of 15-year-old Kate who bravely rushed out into a storm and saved two men as well as preventing hundreds of other lives from being lost. LeVar explores Amtrak's Coast Starlight train and sees how trains are maintained at the train yard before boarding the Coast Starlight to travel along the California coastline. Viewers tour the engineer's cab, find out what an engineer does, and watch film clips of early trains.
