Thunderstorms

teamworkThunderstorms are large, strong storms that usually include thunder and lightning.  They are extremely common in New Hampshire on hot days during the summer.  Although thunderstorms can be extremely dangerous, they provide a great opportunity to explore meteorology, ecology, physics, and chemistry with children.

Making "Lightning"

Activity 3

balloonTo understand more about the properties of lightning you will need an adult, a balloon, and a turned-off light bulb.  This is best done in a dark to semi-dark room.  Have an adult blow-up and tie a balloon.  Rub the balloon on the hair on your head for about ten to fifteen seconds.  Place the balloon up to the light bulb.  The light bulb should slightly light up.  This is due to the fact that you are transferring static electricity from your hair and balloon to the balloon and light bulb.

You can also explore static electricity by rubbing the balloon on your head, again for approximately 15 seconds, and placing it against a wall.  If you gently let go of the balloon it should stick to the wall.

Even more, use a mirror to check out your hair after you are done rubbing the balloon against your head.  If it’s long enough you should see some strands standing on edge.

Static electricity is a large part of the thunderstorms.  It is how lightning is generated, and it also helps explain that way that it moves through the sky.  To learn more about lightning movement click on this website from Kids Storm.
