Did you know sharks don't have any bones? Instead of bones sharks have "cartilage." Cartilage is tough body tissue that even humans have. Our noses and ears are made of cartilage.
Do this activity to have a better understanding of what cartilage feels like and why it may be so easy for sharks to glide and move so quickly.
First you will need a few chicken bones. Typically smaller bones work best. Clean the bones thoroughly using soap and water. Next let the bones soak in vinegar. This may take up to three days depending on the bone size and type. After the bones have soaked, pick them up and explore! How have they changed since you put them in vinegar? How would cartilage, rather than bones, help a shark?
