Keeping the ocean clean is so important to our environment, the way we live, and keeping animals and the Earth safe.

Try this experiment to help understand how hard it is to keep our oceans and water clean. This activity demonstrates how difficult it is to clean an ocean after an oil spill.
Using a shallow baking pan, fill it with 2 - 3 inches of water. Next add some vegetable oil. Try to clean this up using paper towels, cottons balls, sponges, and various soaps. What worked and what did not? Talk about reasons why? You can also add feathers or fur-like material to simulate how this may affect marine life.
Clean up your local beach! Get together with friends, family, and other members of your community. Bring garbage bags and gloves. Be sure not to pick up any garbage that could be harmful, such as glass, needles, or other sharp objects.
