Resources

Ocean in a Bottle

Use recyclable materials to create an ocean scene. Find an empty, clear, cylinder-shaped, plastic bottle to start this project. You will also need mineral or baby oil and blue food coloring.

Fill up ¼ of your bottle with the oil. Fill another ¼ of the bottle with tap water. (The bottle should be ½ full.) Add six drops of blue food coloring. Tightly screw in the cap and secure.

Position the bottle so it is horizontal. Put one hand at the cap and the other at the bottom end. Rock the bottle back and forth and watch how waves work. If you are able to add a small object, like a bead, it may be interesting to watch how the water and object interact during times of movement and times of rest.
