The Environment

plantOur beautiful world is the only one we have, so it's important to take good care of the environment around us and respect all living things, both plants and animals.

Talk with your children about why it's important to care for the environment and that the consequences can be serious when we don't. Help them learn about nature and things to do to keep the environment healthy. Habits children develop when they are young can last a lifetime.

Eco-Friendly Birthday Bash

From: PBS EekoWorld
cakePlan an eco-friendly birthday celebration. Call a family meeting and brainstorm a list of ideas for creating an eco-friendly birthday celebration. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

•  Make cloth gift bags that are reused for every family member's birthday.

•  Make paper to use for wrapping paper.

•  Use washable plates, utensils, and cloth napkins and tablecloths.

•  Look for gifts or party favors with little or no packaging.

•  Make party decorations using recycle materials. Save and reuse them for other family members' birthday parties.

Incorporate your eco-friendly celebration ideas into the holiday season . It is estimated that between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day an extra million tons of waste are generated nationwide each week. In fact, 38,000 miles of ribbon alone is thrown out each year - enough to tie a bow around the Earth! Encourage extended family members and friends to participate in an eco-friendly holiday.
