Spalacidae - blind mole rats, African mole rats, bamboo rats, root rats

East African Mole RatThere are 36 species in this family. They are found in Europe, Asia, and Africa. They live in burrows underground. They have stout bodies; small eyes; small ears; short legs; and big, broad heads. Most species use their strong incisors and front paws to dig in the ground. They eat roots and other underground plant parts. Some species may also eat leaves, seeds, as well as insects and other arthropods.
