Phoenicopteridae - flamingos
There are six species of flamingo in this family.
The
Caribbean flamingo is the brightest member of the flamingo family. It is 3-5 feet tall and is a reddish-pink color and has black wing feathers. It is found in saltwater and brackish lakes and lagoons in the Caribbean, Central and South America, and the
Galapagos Islands.
The Chilean flamingo is found in saltwater marshes and brackish lagoons in South America from Chile to Argentina. It is 3-5 feet tall and is pale pink with black wing feathers.
The lesser flamingo is about 3 feet tall and is found in
alkaline
or saltwater lakes and coastal lagoons in
East and Central Africa. It is pale pink with black wing feathers.
The Andean flamingo is found
alkaline
and saltwater lakes in the mountains of Argentina, Peru, Bolivia, and Chile.
The James flamingo is about 3 feet tall. It is found in
Peru, Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina.
The greater flamingo is the largest of all the flamingos. It can be more than five feet tall. It is found in
Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America.
