(DURHAM, April 1, 2008) — New Hampshire has the sixth oldest population in the country, according to census data, and is facing an enormous caregiving challenge over the next decade and beyond. New Hampshire Public Television’s NH OUTLOOK looks at the issues facing Granite Staters as we care for our parents and ourselves. The “Seeing Seniors” special airs Monday, April 7 @ 9:30 p.m., following the broadcast of the PBS documentary, Caring for Your Parents @ 8 p.m.

What’s it like for families trying to balance life, work, childcare and eldercare? NH OUTLOOK's Phil Vaughn talks with a Laconia woman who became her mother’s caregiver when she started seeing signs of advanced dementia. The story explores why she made the decision to keep her mother at home and discusses some of challenges—financial issues, the search for support services, and the day-to-day emotional dynamics—as well as the rewards.

NH OUTLOOK host Beth Carroll talks with Elinor Ginzler, co-author of the book Caring for Your Parents: The Complete AARP Guide, about options and resources to help caregivers and families navigate this complex emotional terrain. Also, Arlene Kershaw, Director of Senior Services for Easter Seals, challenges us to think about what it means to "age in our communities."

The NH OUTLOOK “Seeing Seniors” special airs Sunday, April 6 @ 9 a.m., Monday, April 7 @ 9:30 p.m. and Tuesday, April 8 @ 7:30 p.m.

NH OUTLOOK, NHPTV’s award-winning public affairs program, is all about New Hampshire. It’s dedicated to statewide coverage of the people, places, politics, communities and culture that make the Granite State unique.
