Celiac Disease Focus of “LiveFIT NH” NH OUTLOOK Series

Stroke Response and Summer Meals Also Topics on NHPTV Special 7/12 & 7/13
(DURHAM, July 8, 2009) — There's an old saying that wheat is the staff of life. But for people who have the genetic disorder celiac disease, wheat can be a source of chronic illness in their lives. Until recently, doctors thought it afflicted about 1 in every 2,000 Americans. NH Outlook’s Susan Hajdu examines the disease and how to live a healthy life with it on the next “LiveFIT NH” special, Sunday, 7/12 @ 9:30 a.m. and Monday, 7/13 @ 6 p.m.

Then, NH Outlook‘s Phil Vaughn looks at how two hospitals are using new techniques to diminish the effects of strokes, the third leading cause of death in the United States. Responding quickly to the signs of stroke can make the difference in who survives and who does not. While there are no certified stroke centers in New Hampshire, several hospitals are doing the next best thing, partnering with Massachusetts General Hospital in the TeleStroke program.

And in the third segment of the program, dietitian and author Eileen Behan shows how to create simple, easy dishes with this summer’s bounty of local fruits and vegetables.

NHPTV’s award-winning weekly public affairs program focuses on state, regional and national issues. With engaging guests and experts, the discussion format offers lively and relevant perspectives. NH OUTLOOK airs Sundays at 9:30 a.m. and again Mondays at 6 p.m. NH OUTLOOK programs are also available for viewing online at nhptv.org/outlook, along with other series and specials like “LiveFIT NH,” “Making Sense: The Economy and Northern New England,” “More Than Money: Investor Survival Guide” series, and the “NH Authors Series.”

Working with partner organizations statewide, LiveFIT NH (nhptv.org/livefitnh) is NHPTV’s community engagement initiative that encourages healthy eating and physical activity in children and adults. Through a multi-part series on NHPTV’s NH OUTLOOK program, a “LiveFIT NH Challenge,” “FitTips,” and other education and outreach activities and resources, the project demonstrates that Living Fit is for EveryBody.

Workshops held around the state by NHPTV’s Ready To Learn program provide information on nutrition, exercise, and fun activities for children, educators, parents and caregivers.

The LiveFIT NH initiative is generously funded by the Hilda & Preston Davis Foundation, Byrne Foundation, Baldwin Foundation, and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
