DOVER THIRD GRADER WINS 1st PLACE IN NATIONAL PBS KIDS WRITERS CONTEST

(DURHAM, JULY 25, 2014) — Robert Frost, Donald Hall, and now Jishnu Dey are all award-winning poets from New Hampshire. Dover third grader Jishnu Pablo Dey won the first-place prize for third grade in the national PBS KIDS WRITERS CONTEST. Jishnu’s winning book, “A Humble Book of Poems (With a Little Seasoning),” is a collection of poems about the seasons illustrated with mixed media artwork. (Read the story here: www.nhptv.org/kidswrite.) Jishnu’s work was one of 450 stories received from children in K – 3rd grade for the NHPTV-PBS KIDS WRITERS CONTEST. NHPTV’s first-place winners competed nationally with entries from 65 other public television stations.“The writing contest has been such an inspiration for Jishnu,” said his mother Dolon Dutta. Jishnu, who attends Horne Street Elementary School in Dover, added, “I like writing poems because they give you a good feeling.”The NHPTV-PBS KIDS WRITERS CONTEST encourages children in K – 3rd grade to explore the power of creativity by writing and illustrating their own stories. It promotes reading skills through hands-on, active learning. This is the 20th year NHPTV has hosted a writing and illustrating contest for children, and more than 10,000 children have participated over the years. “We are so pleased for Jishnu that his terrific book of poems and illustrations was recognized on a national level,” commented NHPTV President and CEO Peter Frid. “The PBS KIDS WRITERS CONTEST promotes creativity and helps children build valuable literacy skills for success in school and life. NHPTV has had seven other national winners since 2000. It’s great to see another local child recognized at a national level.”The NHPTV-PBS KIDS WRITERS CONTEST is part of NHPTV's commitment to promote a love of reading, writing, and creative expression in children. The contest aligns with New Hampshire state writing, reading, and art standards, and is made possible with support from Heinemann, Fidelity Investments, and Lincoln Financial Foundation.
