Aired Wednesday, Jan 21, 2004
|
It's estimated that by the year 2050 - here in New Hampshire, 50 to 75-thousand people will be living with Alzheimer's. It's a disease that will devastate families, stress communities and push the limits of our health care system.
In this special edition of New Hampshire Outlook, Allison McNair brings us the story of one New Hampshire family.
When former state legislator Susan McLane was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, her daughter Ann McLane Kuster began to write a memoir. Each Friday, she sat down with her mother to capture her memories. The Last Dance chronicles the journey of a family coping with the onset of Alzheimer's.
Following the segment we talk to Dr. Robert Santulli, of Dartmouth Hitchock Medical Center. His specialty is geriatric psychiatry and memory disorders. Dr. Santulli is also President of the Alzheimer's Association of New Hampshire and Vermont. We also talk to Sherri Harden, a Public Policy Specialist with the Alzheimer's Assoc of VT & NH and Arlene Kershaw. Arlene is the Director of Senior Services for Easter Seals, New Hampshire.
