Seeing Seniors: Caring for Your Parents
Aired Sunday, Jun 22, 2008
|
In this half-hour special report, NH Outlook explores the issues facing Granite Staters as increasing numbers of families try to balance life, work, child and eldercare.
NH Outlook's Phil Vaughn talks with a Laconia woman who became her mother's caregiver when she started seeing signs of advanced dementia. The story explores why she made the decision to keep her mother at home and discusses some of the challenges -- the financial issues, the search for support services, and the day-to-day emotional dynamics -- as well as the rewards.
NH Outlook host Beth Carroll talks with Elinor Ginzler, co-author of the book Caring for Your Parents: The Complete AARP Guide, about options and resources to help caregivers and families navigate this complex and emotional terrain.
Also, Arlene Kershaw, Director of Senior Services for Easter Seals NH , challenges us to think about what it means to "age in our communities."
If you're facing the eldercare challenge, the main resource for information in New Hampshire is ServiceLink. You can contact NH ServiceLink toll free at 1-866-634-9412 to find out about services and resources in your county.
