NH Outlook - New Hampshire Public Television

New Hampshire's poets, novelists and authors talk with writer and humorist  Rebecca Rule in a series of one-on-one conversations before audiences at the University of New Hampshire's Dimond Library.

The New Hampshire Authors' Series is produced by NHPTV in partnership with the Friends of the UNH Library and UNH Video Services.

Below are links to each broadcast, each running about 30 minutes.

2007/2008 SEASON

  • MAXINE KUMIN
    February 25 ,2008
    Maxine Kumin is the acclaimed author of poetry, novels, children's books and a memoir called "Inside the Halo and Beyond." She shares her thoughts on the writing life with New Hampshire storyteller and humorist Rebecca Rule.

    Kumin is the winner of the Ruth Lilly Prize, the Robert Frost Medal and the Pulitzer Prize. She also served as consultant of poetry to the Library of Congress before the post was renamed Poet Laureate of the United States.

    UNH English Professor and author Meredith Hall talks about her best-selling memoir, Without a Map.
    Hall describes the process of writing this stunning personal story, its impact on her own life and what it's like to be suddenly "famous."

  • DAVID CARROLL

    David Carroll is an award-winning writer and illustrator of natural histories, most notably The Year of the Turtle, Trout Reflections and Swampwalker's Journal. Carroll is the 2006 recipient of a $500,000 McArthur Foundation genius grant. In this program, Carroll talks to program host Rebecca Rule about his life, art, writing and passion for turtles and wetlands.

  • BRENDAN DUBOIS

    Mystery and suspense author Brendan DuBois has been widely published for years. He has written a dozen novels and books of prose. In this interview, DuBois describes the process of character and story development in his work.

    Beloved childhood author and illustrator Tomie dePaola has written hundreds of children's books and in this program, reads from one. He talks about inspiring a young generation of readers and encouraging everyone to believe in their dreams.

  • MEKEEL MCBRIDE

    Mekeel McBride is the author of seven books of poetry. Her latest work, Dog Star Delicatessen brings together a selection of poems from her previous books as well as twenty new poems. McBride has been teaching at UNH since 1979.

  • JODI PICOULT
    Jodi Picoult is the best-selling author of 15 novels that center on family, relationships, and the balance of love. She speaks to Rebecca Rule about her work, her life as a working mom and her deep relationship with her readers.

  • ALEXANDER PARSONS
    Alexander Parsons teaches fiction writing at UNH, has published two novels and has a third novel in the works. Rule talks to Parsons about the idea-centered novel, teaching, the writing process, martial artist Bruce Lee and more.

  • CHARLES SIMIC
    Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Charles Simic has been a professor of English at UNH for over 30 years. He’s published more than 60 books of poetry and prose. He’s also received a MacArthur Fellowship, the American Academy of Poets Edgar Allen Poe Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship and two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. In 2003 he was awarded the international Horst Bienek Prize for Poetry.
