Mindless Eating

If you've ever gone into a sub shop, ordered a low fat sandwich and left with a brownie, chips and soda you're not alone.
Most of us make hundreds of food decisions every day and those choices can lead to over-eating.
Outlook's Phil Vaughn introduces us to the concept of Mindless Eating and talks to the scientist who wrote the book on why we eat more than we think.

The Media's Influence on Healthy Eating

How often do you think about the impact that the media has on your health? Chances are not as often as you should be. In today's world, advertisements can be found almost anywhere... on the websites we visit, in the magazines we read, and especially in the TV we watch. So how do we teach ourselves, and our children, to pay better attention to the food we're consuming? It starts with understanding our consumption of media. Phil Vaughn takes a closer look.

Food Security in New Hampshire

A recent study in New Hampshire says that a third of the state's children are overweight or obese. Getting children outside and exercising is a good way to counter that trend. But an equally important part of the process is altering children's diets to include more healthy foods, like fruit and vegetables. That's not always easy for families on a budget. Phil Vaughn introduces us to the term "food security," in this report.

Take The Challenge

When we launched the LiveFit NH series in the fall of 2006, we challenged families throughout the state to change their lifestyle; it's called the LiveFit Challenge. Two of the keys to living fit are adopting a balanced diet and getting routine exercise. One family from Manchester did just that when they took the LiveFit Challenge this past year. Meet the Barkers, of Manchester.

It's to change your entire relationship with food.
Outlook's Phil Vaughn has the story in this month's LiveFIT NH report.
Also in this segment, registered dietitian and author Eileen Behan shows us some simple steps to begin building a better relationship with food.

The incidence of Type 2 Diabetes cases is on the rise. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) an estimated 50% of children with this dangerous chronic disease are going undiagnosed. Obesity and lifestyle choices are a contributing factor of the disease, but enacting healthy changes can make a difference. In this LiveFIT NH report, Producer Phil Vaughn shows us how a mother and daughter are coping with the diagnosis.

Healthy Fast Food Choices

In the 1940's, two brothers from Manchester introduced a new culinary concept to America: fast food.
Opening the first McDonald's restaurant in California created a ripple effect across the country.
Eating on the run is now as much a part of American culture as, well, apple pie.
Critics of fast food say it's helped create a generation of obese children.
That criticism seems to have sparked change within the industry as fast-food restaurants offer more healthy options.
The key is knowing what to order.

We offer some help in this LiveFIT New Hampshire report from Portsmouth author and registered dietitian, Eileen Behan

Circusfit and Physical Education in Schools

Outlook's Phil Vaughn looks at New Hampshire school guidelines for keeping kids fit. While there is a requirement that schools provide a physical education component, there is no requirement for physical activity. Activity, experts say is what young people need to learn better.
In this program, we'll meet one group of teachers learning to new ways to incorporate activity and fun in their physical education classes. They even do a little clowning around with the the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey CircusFit program.

Brown Bag Snack and Lunch Tips

Surprisingly, school lunches are often a lot healthier than what kids bring from home. Many students bring soda, candy and other snack foods.
But even if you pack healthy foods in that brown bag, it doesn't mean children will eat it. So, how do you make healthy lunches that are envied by other kids and eaten by yours?
Portsmouth author and registered dietitian, Eileen Behan enlists the help of Madison Morris and her mother Andrea to show us all some practical tips on packing health snacks.

Grading School Lunches

According to the Centers for Disease Control, nearly 20% of school-aged Americans are overweight or obese. That number is almost four times what it was in the 1970's. In NH we don't keep close track of numbers but there are plenty of observations.
We're seeing more children with Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and fatty liver. These diseases were rare to see in a child 20 years ago.

Phil Vaughn shows us how many of NH's schools are now searching for ways to help change that.
