Each state is allotted a number of delegates based on population and the number of votes the Democratic presidential candidate received in the last general election.

The party also awards "Superdelegate" or "Unpledged Delegate" slots to Democratic elected officials, party leaders and Democratic members of Congress. These delegates may support any candidate.
