Carolyn Chute was born in 1947. She spent her childhood in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Her novels look at the lives of the rural poor. Chute has been the subject of some controversy for her involvement in the militia movement. She currently lives in Maine with her family. Works include: The Beans of Egypt, Maine (1985); Letourneau's Used Auto Parts (1988); Merry Men  (1994); and Snow Man (1999)
