Lesson Plan Elements

Learning Objectives

What specific learning objectives will be met using the video? What measurable outcomes will be achieved by the students? In addition to content specific outcomes, also consider creating media literacy objectives. For example, you might have students identify camera angles used during a segment and indicate why they were used or you might have students note the type of music used and how it did or did not enhance the content.

Pre-viewing Activities

Before using the video, engage students in previewing activities. Previewing activities can be used to check for prior learning, motivate students, direct them to targeted objectives and concepts, present lesson vocabulary and generate questions.

Focus for Viewing

Leading into viewing each segment of video give students a focus for viewing. Let them know what you want them to pay attention to and what you expect them to learn during each segment.

Segmented Viewing Activities

What types of activities will students be engaged in during viewing? Viewing activities can range from simple question and answer sessions to a hands-on activity. Viewing activities should be driven by lesson objectives and the video.

Post-Viewing Activities

Post-viewing activities should allow students to delve more deeply into the content. Hands-on activities, simulations, writing assignments, and debates are some ways to extend learning after viewing.

Extensions

Look for additional interdisciplinary activities that could enhance and extend the lesson.

Resources

Identify print, video, computer-based, Internet, and other possible resources that could enhance the learning experience for the students.
