Implementing a Lesson
Teacher Preparation
a. Identify learning objectives.
b. Consult NHPTV Knowledge Network Program Guide to locate potential series/programs.
c. Consult series teacher's guide for program overviews, ideas, and resources.
d. Preview selected programs. Make notes about the program's content including natural breaks in video for discussion or activities. Look specifically for segments that will enhance the lesson's objectives and meet student needs.
e. Plan previewing and post-viewing activities to incorporate into the lesson.
f. Collect additional resources and materials needed for lesson.
g. Reserve equipment.
Prepare the Viewing Area
a. Place monitor where all students can comfortably see it.
b. Provide adequate lighting. Avoid both glare and complete darkness.
c. Cue video before using.
Pre-viewing Activities
a. Introduce lesson objectives to the students.
b. Introduce new vocabulary and concepts.
c. Explain what the video is and why it will be used.
d. Discuss major points that will be covered in the video segment.
e. Provide focus activities or viewing directions.
f. Give the students specific tasks to perform while viewing.
g. List key concepts.
h. Ask the students questions that will check prior knowledge and provoke thought.
i. Establish a focus for viewing.
Viewing Activities
a. Actively participate in viewing with the students.
b. Use the program in segments.
c. Utilize the features of the VCR/TV to enhance the viewing and reinforce objectives. (for example: view without sound to have students provide narration, view without picture, pause and use the screen as a video blackboard...)
Post-viewing Activities
a. Allow time for discussion of video.
b. Use hands-on, exploratory activities that encourage application of knowledge.
c. Encourage students to engage in writing activities that support objectives.
Follow-up Activities
a. Look for community resources to augment program topics and lesson objectives.
b. Explore ways to use the information presented in the program in a variety of curriculum areas.
c. Evaluate effectiveness of the video in meeting instructional objectives. |

ITV Database
You can search the Instructional Television Database by subject and grade level. For each series you will find detailed episode descriptions, schedules, related series, and links to related web resources. For many series you will also find lesson plans and streaming video. You can also find programming information in the 2007-2008 Knowledge Network Program Guide. This guide is in PDF format and you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to access it.
Find an ITV Program
Video On Demand
You can access selected series on the web via videostreaming. Some of the series are password protected. Contact the Knowledge Network for the password for your school or SAU. Home schools can also be issued a password. You will need RealPlayer to access these online videos. Recording Online Videos: If you are using the latest version of RealPlayer, you can also download videos to your RealPlayer Library.
