Curriculum Standard 4
Students will demonstrate competence in understanding, appreciating, interpreting, and critically analyzing classical and contemporary American and British literature as well as literary works translated into English.Proficiency Standards
By the end of grade three students will be able to:
- Recognize and understand story elements including character, setting, conflict, plot, and theme.
- Relate the literary texts they read, hear, or view to their prior knowledge and experiences.
- Identify author's purpose or intent in written, spoken, and audio-visual texts.
- Appreciate and respond to written, spoken, and audio-visual texts.
- Understand the characteristics of a variety of simple genres including fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, fairy tales, poetry, plays, fables, and folktales.
- Make connections among the texts they read, hear, and view.
- Demonstrate knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of a variety of literary and narrative works representing classical and contemporary literature such as Caldecott books and worthy examples of writing by local and regional authors.

Listen to, analyze, and describe music.
Proficiency Standards
By the end of grade four students will be able to:
- Identify simple music forms when presented aurally.
- Demonstrate perceptual skills by moving to, inquiring about, and describing aural examples of music from various styles representing diverse cultures.
- Use appropriate terminology in explaining music, music notation, music instruments and voices, and music performances.
- Identify the sounds of different instruments, including many orchestra and band instruments, and instruments from various cultures, as well as children's voices and male and female adult voices.
- Respond through purposeful movement to selected prominent features in a piece of music.

By the end of grade four students will be able to:
- Devise criteria for evaluating performances and compositions.
- Explain, using appropriate music terminology, personal preferences for specific musical works and styles.
